Gyaur Kala is an unusual settlement.
The small fortress is roughly square in plan, preserving sections of mud- brick walls and corner towers. From this citadel, two ridges representing the remains of further exterior walls head off southeastwards towards the crest of the hill. They disappear beneath a large barchan sand dune, but then reappear again on the other side of the dune, running down the side of the hill to enclose an area never more than 150m wide, and almost 0.5km in length. The undulations of the external walls reflect the sites of the many towers which would have stood along them. The unusual form of the site has led some researchers to speculate that this may have been a Zoroastrian sanctuary, centred on a ceremonial staircase rising up the hill.
